Custom Labels using Google Sheets Extensions

Design and print your own custom order labels with exactly the details you need

Local Line includes several different popular inkjet and thermal label sizes and layouts to allow you to print labels for your orders. It's not possible to customize the built-in templates, but if you need something specific that the existing labels don't provide, a great option is to use the Orders summary export combined with a label printing extension in Google Sheets.

There are many different extensions available, for this example we'll be using Avery Label Merge from Quicklution:

(Extensions can be found and installed in Google Sheets by going to Extensions -> Add-ons -> Get add-ons)

After installing the extension, you'll want to export the orders you want to print labels for from Local Line. Head to your Orders table, and then filter or select the orders and click the Export button:

We've found the best export type for creating custom labels is Orders summary. You can use the Orders list (by product line item) export, however when generating the labels you'll end up with a separate label for each line item on the order, as opposed to a single label for the whole order.

Click Generate to create the export, and after a moment your browser should automatically download the file.

Back in Google Sheets, in a new blank sheet you'll want to import the export you just created. Click File -> Import, then click Upload and then Browse. Locate the export you just downloaded and select it, and then click Import data to finish the import.

At this point you'll have a new spreadsheet with a row for each order you selected for export, and columns for each of the fields on the export (e.g. order number, customer name, order total, etc)

Now click Extensions -> Avery Label Merge -> Start (note if you installed a different extension it will appear here instead)

The extension then opens the label design window where you can choose which label format you're using, and customize which details will be included (note that different extensions may have slightly different interfaces):

Here you can modify the font and font size and position of the fields, add additional fields using the Add Merge Field dropdown and Add button. For example you may want to change Date to Fulfillment Date, and add the customer phone number and the order payment details:

Once you have finished making your changes, click Merge Labels to generate the labels (note that template changes are automatically saved so they can be reused for additional labels).

After the labels have been generated, a PDF file will automatically be downloaded that you can then print using your printer and the chosen label format:
